Breast cancer symptoms

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK, affecting about one in eight women at some point in their lives. It can also occur in men, but much less frequently.

The most common breast cancer symptoms

The most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump in the breast or armpit that is new or has changed in size or shape.

Other common breast cancer symptoms include:

  • A change in the size or shape of one or both breasts
  • Discharge from the nipple (not breast milk)
  • A change in the appearance of the nipple, such as becoming inverted or sunken

Less common breast cancer symptoms

Less common breast cancer symptoms can include:

  • Puckering or dimpling of the breast skin
  • A rash or redness on the breast
  • Breast pain
  • Nipple pain
  • Itchy skin on the breast or nipple
  • A crusty or scaly patch on the breast or nipple
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit

When to see a doctor

It is important to note that not all breast lumps are cancerous. In fact, most breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). However, it is always best to have any new or unusual breast lumps checked by a doctor.

You should see a doctor if you notice any of the following breast cancer symptoms:

  • A new lump or thickening in your breast or armpit
  • A change in size, shape or feel of your breast
  • Skin changes in the breast such as puckering, dimpling, a rash or redness of the skin
  • Fluid leaking from your nipple in a woman who isn't pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Changes in the position of your nipple
  • Breast pain
